Context

Afro Arab Youth Council (AAYC) was inaugurated by youth of Africa and Arab world gathering in Khartoum, Sudan in 2004. Its headquarter later changed to Uganda after the resolution of the Afro Arab Youth Festival of 2008, in Munyonyo (Kampala Declaration) that resolved to construct its AAYC permanent home in Kampala. A secretariat was set up at Bunamwaya to pursue the objectives of the AAYC as outlined in the AAYC Statutes.

The AAYC aims to use practical approaches to deal with youth pressing issues and provide realistic solutions which corelate with the current times. It is therefore an advocacy group for youth with membership of over 50 countries of the African and Arab world including African Union, Arab League and other International bodies.

 

Position Objective

Contributing to AAYC’s mission by developing and implementing effective communication strategies that enhance visibility and engagement. Utilizing skills in content creation, media relations, and digital communication to amplify youth voices and promote impactful programs.

Main Duties (30%)

  • Develop and implement communication strategies to promote AAYC’s programs, events, and initiatives across different platforms.

  • Create and distribute communication materials such as press release, newsletters, reports, and promotional content with the Manager PR & Communication’s guidance and approval.

  • Coordinate with media houses, partners and stakeholders to enhance visibility and maintain a positive public image.

  • Document activities, success stories, and impact, and ensure effective internal and external communication within the organization.

Other duties (10%)
  • Manage social media accounts, websites, and digital content to ensure consistent, engaging, and up-to-date information.

  • Organize and manage press conferences, media briefings, and public relations events.

  • Monitor media coverage and public perception of organization, providing feedback and recommendations.

  • Ensure brand consistency by maintaining communication guidelines, logos, and messaging standards.

  • Support advocacy and awareness campaigns by developing targeted messages for different audiences.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent knowledge of diplomacy and Public relations.

  • Excellent knowledge of business etiquette

  • Excellent knowledge in social media management e.g. Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, X-space etc.

  • Knowledge of content creation and basic graphic design.  Edit and update promotional material and publications (brochures, videos, social media posts etc.) 

  • Familiar with Website/content management systems.

  • Ability to handle crisis communication and reputation management.

  • Knowledge on media relations and networking.

  • Ability to always maintain confidentiality, time management and adaptability.

  • Write and produce presentations and press releases. 

  • Deal with enquiries from the public, the press, and related organizations. Organizing and attending promotional events such as press conferences, open days, exhibitions, tours, and visits, speaking publicly at interviews, press conferences and presentations and ensuring all media arms of the Organization are running.

  • Prepare and submit PR reports 

  • Assist the Manager for Communications & PR to create and disseminate articles and for media both online and paper media.

  • Develop PR campaigns and media relations strategies 

  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g. marketing) and maintain open communication with senior management. 

  • Ability to work in a team, and demonstrate the highest level of professional integrity, respect and diplomacy for colleagues and others.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of corporate communications and branding.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (oral and written), customer service skills, sound negotiation and presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability in the production of informational materials.

  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of programs, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint and the ability to learn new software applications.

  • Ability to handle crises in a diplomatic and effective manner.

  • Ability to build trust and credibility and establish and maintain effective working relationships with other colleagues. 

  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Academic Qualifications and Experience

  • Masters or Bachelor’s degree from a recognized Institution in Communication, Public Relations, Journalism, Media Studies, Strategic or Corporate Communications, Marketing, or a related Field. 

  • Minimum of three years working experience in Public Relations, Communication, Media Relations, Marketing, Branding.
